RECORD OF THE WEEK
Give 'Em Hell - Witchfynde
Give 'em Hell is the debut album by the British heavy metal band Witchfynde. The album was released in 1980 during the new wave of British heavy metal glorious heyday. The album has been cited as a prime example for the production of the NWOBHM scene and as an inspiration for the black metal subgenre.
Just one look at the album cover and you can hear the screams of “THINK OF THE CHILDREN” that plagued pop-culture during the 1980s with the infamous “Satanic Panic” epidemic. Never forget that many hours were spent in American court hearings where righteous moral crusaders tried to ban a plethora of cultural icons ranging from Dungeons and Dragons to certain music such as Heavy Metal. So when you take Give ‘em Hell for a spin you’re making a statement. In the famous words of Twisted Sister’s Dee Snider - We’re not gonna take it!
COMIC OF THE WEEK
Daredevil: Guardian Devil
Guardian Devil is a Daredevil story arc published by Marvel Comics. The comic follows Daredevil who finds himself suddenly caring for an infant that may be either the Messiah or the Antichrist (yes really!). Guardian Devil is written by independent filmmaker Kevin Smith and illustrated by Joe Quesada. This hardback graphic novel combines the previously eight issue comics into one collection features and introduction by non-other than Hollywood A-lister Ben Affleck, who portrayed Daredevil in the 2003 feature film adaptation (in which Kevin Smith had a supporting role) and previously worked with Kevin Smith in his films Mallrats, Dogma and Chasing Amy. The story features strong Catholic themes, which came from writer Smith's own experiences who is a confessed lapsed Catholic.
Daredevil and Spider-Man have, though the years, forged a strong working relationship, going so far as to trust one another with their secret identities. The urban adventurers share many similarities- but just how different are they? In this titanic team-up, the Man Without Fear and the friendly neighborhood wall-crawler unite-but often rub each other the wrong way- to put a stop to an evil plan, by an unlikely group of 4 of Marvel's darker villains, hired by the Kingpin of Crime.
