RECORD OF THE WEEK
The Concerts In China - Jean Michel Jarre
Les Concerts en Chine or as the English title goes The Concerts in China is a double vinyl live album by French synth jedi Jean-Michel Jarre. The album (recorded in 1981 and released in 1982) was published on the French records label Disques Dreyfus. Les Concerts en Chine was recorded during Jarre's Concerts in China tour during the Fall of 1981. Gigs were organised of five performances in Beijing and Shanghai, China. A significant tour in music history as this was the first time a Western pop artist performed in China after the Cultural Revolution.
The album consists of previously released tracks by J-M-J, new synth-compositions inspired by Chinese music, and one rearranged traditional Chinese track Fishing Junks at Sunset or as the French track goes Jonques de pêcheurs au crépuscule. The album is comprised of live material, plus ambient sound recordings and one new studio track Souvenir of China. The Concerts in China album is a fascinating flash point in music history and being a recording of live performances gives you a chilling feeling of being there where two cultures are now meeting for the first time.
Atomic highly recommends this Greek pressing of the double vinyl live album.
COMIC OF THE WEEK
Black Hole by Charles Burns
Set in the suburbs of Seattle during the mid 1970s, Black Hole follows a group of teenagers who contract a mysterious sexually transmitted disease referred to as "the Bug". The Bug causes them to develop bizarre unique physical mutations and subsequently become social outcasts, many of them running away from home to live in the nearby woodland. Focusing on four central characters, the viewpoint changes between (and sometimes within) issues.
Highly regarded as a masterpiece, Charles Burns has said that the mutations can be read as a metaphor for adolescence, sexual awakening and the transition into adulthood. A frank, unique and gripping look at at time in our lives where everything changes Black Hole is more proof that comics can be a mature and robust medium that captures important narratives in beautiful images. So beatutiful in fact Charles Burns Burns also won the 1998, 1999, 2001, 2002, 2004, 2005 and 2006 Harvey Award as "Best Inker" for his work on the series.
Beautifly inked and thoughtfully written, Black Hole is Atomic's comic of the week and one of our favorite pieces of Art in any medium.
